On Thursday, 25 August 2016, Midrand Primary hosted the first African Languages Literacy Celebrations. Initiated by Mr Machete from the district, the day saw 10 schools presenting poetry and stories to celebrate women in isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, Sepedi, Tshivenda and Xitsonga.
Under the theme of Women’s Month, learners in grade 4 to grade 6 wowed the audience with their presentation and enthusiasm for their language. The aim of the celebrations was to promote pride in African languages and encourage appreciation of mother tongue languages. The day was ended by Ayanda from Zenzeleni Primary school with a moving declaration to her mother.
